Certification & CEUs
The Center for Wilderness Safety is proud to be an authorized provider of the American Red Cross, offering community health & safety certification programs since 2003. Even though our primary area of instruction for Red Cross courses is the greater metropolitan Washington DC, Northern VA and MD areas, we are easily able to teach across the country. Learn more about our Red Cross courses.
The wilderness & remote medicine courses curriculum that we teach is our own, and is in accordance with the National Guidelines for Wilderness Emergency Care, published by the Wilderness Medical Society. Our curriculum is evidence-based, not just copied out of a textbook, and has been designed to far exceed the expectations of our students.
Our wilderness medicine courses are built in-part around our wilderness medicine protocols which are supported by a physician-based medical advisory panel and approved for organizational and training use by our medical director. This means you're getting the latest findings and protocols in the industry.
With the Center for Wilderness Safety's comprehensive curriculum, you can quickly earn the certifications you need to become a confident first responder. We can help you round out your skills by equipping you to handle medical emergencies quickly and effectively.
Our certified instructors are both healthcare professionals and trained educators who work regularly with patients in both emergency and wilderness settings. As a result, they have a special talent for bringing reality into an active learning environment - with small, intimate classes to assure you get the personal attention you deserve.
We teach you to apply new skills through repetition and through hands-on practice. In fact, most of our courses immerse you in real-world training scenarios that help you retain what you've learned - from night mock rescues to use of moulage (fake injuries, stage blood, etc.) during routine skills assessments and case studies.
Our Wilderness First Aid course curriculum is that, presented by the Wilderness Medical Society, and the Boy Scouts of America, now required for the high adventure bases, Philmont and Northern Tier. Our Wilderness First Responder curriculum is also based upon (and exceeds) the Wilderness Medical Society's National Practice Guidelines for Wilderness Emergency Care. Both certifications are nationally accepted.
